What happens to my WordPress site if the theme license lapses or the account disconnects?
In short: Your site stays up. In Wiozen Theme the license only unlocks the theme's admin panel (designs, settings, front page modules, demo content) and automatic updates; when it lapses, the pages visitors see, the design you picked and the settings you saved stay exactly as they are. The panel shows a message saying why it's locked. In most cases reconnecting the site is enough; only an admin revocation needs a word with support.
What locks and what keeps working when the license lapses?
Keeps working: the front of the site, every post and page, the Site Editor and the changes you made there. The design you picked stays too; if you're on Finance, the site keeps opening in Finance. Settings such as dark mode and the breaking news strip, and the order of your front page modules, live in the WordPress database and aren't deleted with the license.
Locks: the Designs, Settings, Customize and Demo content tabs under Appearance › Wiozen Theme. Without a license you can't switch designs, add modules or remove the demo with one button. A new version shows up on the WordPress updates screen but can't be installed, because no package is handed out.
What does each panel message mean?
The theme states the reason for the lock at the top of the panel. The messages and what to do:
- "Total top-ups: $X / $5": the wallet of the account connected to the site hasn't received $5 in total top-ups yet. Add funds and press "Check again". Spending the balance later doesn't drop the license; a refunded top-up is taken off the total.
- "Wiozen Theme was removed from your account's connected apps": Wiozen Theme's permission was removed from Connected apps in the account settings. That closes the license on every site connected to that account. Connect each site again.
- "The site address changed": you changed the domain, moved the site to another subfolder, or copied the database to another address. The license is tied to the address, though moving from http to https doesn't count as a change; connect once again at the new one. The original site's license at the old address isn't affected.
- "Theme files were modified": one of the theme's PHP, JS, CSS, HTML or JSON files differs from the released version. Reinstall the theme from the download page. If you move your changes into a child theme there's no problem; a child theme doesn't count as a modification.
- "This theme version is not recognized": the installed version was never released on themes.wiozen.com. Download and install it from there.
- "The license was revoked": an admin revoked it for abuse. Reconnecting with the same account doesn't lift it; contact support.
- "This site is connected to another Wiozen account": another account holds an open license for the site. That account's owner can release it; if the site really is yours, the domain proof below works too.
Does the panel lock if themes.wiozen.com can't be reached?
No. If your server loses access, a request times out or the license server is down for maintenance, the theme keeps using the last verified license. It retries after an hour, then after six hours, then goes back to the daily check.
If the last successful check is more than 14 days old, the panel shows a warning asking you to check that your server can reach themes.wiozen.com. The warning doesn't lock the panel. A common cause is a host or a security plugin blocking outgoing requests.
How often is the license checked?
The theme checks the license once a day, at a random time, through WP-Cron. When you open the panel and the last check is older than 24 hours, it asks once more. It also checks right after the theme updates.
If you want a change to take effect right away, press "Check again" in the panel, for example after adding funds. Removing the app from Connected apps shows up within 24 hours through the daily check; a manual check catches it at once.
No outside request is made for the license when a visitor opens a page. The status is read from the site's own database.
What happens if I switch to another theme and come back?
When you switch from Wiozen Theme to another theme, the theme closes its license and disconnects the site on its own. When you switch back, the panel opens locked; click "Connect Wiozen" and approve again. Your design and settings are still in the database, so you find everything as you left it once connected.
To detach a site on purpose, the panel has a "Disconnect" button. If you can no longer reach the site, detach it from the My sites page on themes.wiozen.com; the site's next check won't find the license and locks the panel.
Domain proof: if someone else claims my site
If someone runs the connect flow with your domain first and tries to take the site into their own account, the theme settles it with a domain proof. On every connect, the theme publishes a random proof at the site's own address for 15 minutes. If the license server can read that proof, the site really is in the hands of the person connecting, and the license moves to them.
So whoever can run the site can always take it back, and someone who only knows the domain can't. An admin revocation is the exception: the same account can't lift it by reconnecting, disconnecting or releasing the site from My sites. Only an admin can lift it.
Frequently asked questions
If the license lapses, does my site go back to the News design?
No. The design you picked stays saved and the site keeps opening in it. Changing designs needs the panel, and the panel needs a license.
Will I lose the license if I spend my balance?
No. The rule is $5 in total top-ups to date. Spending doesn't lower that total; only a refunded top-up does.
How many sites can I license with one account?
There's no limit. Each site gets its own license for its own address; on a multisite each subsite connects separately.
Can I get security updates without a license?
Not automatically. The new version shows on the updates screen but no package is given. You can take the zip from the download page and install it by hand; the panel stays locked.
For the license rule and which sites are tied to your account, see the My sites page on themes.wiozen.com; if you need to reinstall, download the latest version here.
